The roof’s not the limit with yet another sexy Italian

This past weekend, Maserati introduced the latest vehicle in its portfolio to make you drool and forget about Ferrari. Introduced at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering (yes, that’s what it’s called, and judging by the cost of entry, they can call themselves whatever they want), the MC20 Cielo is simply the roadster version of the MC20 sports car that Maserati introduced in 2020.

To the gringos out there, “cielo” is Italian for “sky,” though I suspect some Italophiles would say it means “heaven.” According to Maserati, the act of folding and unfolding the two-piece roof and sliding into the rear housing takes 12 seconds. Added weight is only 143 pounds. Additionally, a unique PDLC glass features a Cielo button that allows you to switch modes, from matte to clear, in an instant. It’s somewhat the best of both worlds.

Of course, since it’s an MC20, the other specs should be familiar, like the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 offering 621 horsepower that can bring the Emcee past the 200-mph mark. The mid-engined MC20’s engine shares the lineage with that of Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, so the bloodlines are there. Several generations ago, that probably would be considered sacrilege, but the world is different now, as it’s always been.

It wasn’t too long ago — around 25 years ago, actually — that Maserati was at the twilight of its lean years. The fact that the brand didn’t perish is a miracle, with the 2003 Quattroporte truly shifting Maserati’s fortunes as it began exhibiting its mojo in ways it hadn’t in decades.

The color palette of the MC20 Cielo is what’s you’d expect for a sports car of its caliber (red, yellow, black, white, and a pair of grays), but the signature color is Acquamarina. “Oceanic hues inspired by the sea and the restless energy beneath the waves are captures in a mesmerizing new color, available exclusively for the Maserati MC20 Cielo,” says Maserati. There will also be a 1-of-65 PrimaSerie Limited Edition featuring distinctive, matching elements both inside and outside, plus the Fuoriserie personalization program to create your own bespoke MC20 Cielo.

Take a gander at the debut of the MC20 Cielo plus several other historic vehicles in the House of Maserati showcase.
